Anyone old enough to remember the indignity of the grade school social hierarchy can easily recall a time when something as simple (and utilitarian) as a backpack could stand as a symbol of status. Ever true to the code of the schoolyard designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez regularly utilize academic nostalgia as source material. Case in point Proenza Schouler’s aptly named PS1 bag immediately conjures images of homerooms and homework with it’s bookstraps and vintage schoolbag design. Whether in petal pink, basic black or extrovert chartreuse the sumptuous materials (python, leather, special order croc) and unique look more than justify the hefty pricetag. While the PS1 will surely land you a spot at the “cool” table it’s charm lies in reminding us of youth’s ease rather than it’s folly.
