Antonio Lopez defined the look of the 80s or better yet he refined it. Lopez translated the decade’s affinity for excess into fashion illustrations that showcased not just the clothing but also the spirt of the time. Aerobicized bodies, vibrant colors and dramatic themes were commonplace within his work and helped to embody the Reagan era’s obsession with personal perfection.
One of the hallmarks of Lopez’ work was his intrepid use of bright primary colors in bold combination. It’s this element that photographer Ben Hassett translates into 3 dimensions – taking the expressive face of Karmen Pedaru, a shock of bright makeup and a series of wild cartoonish poses worthy of the Joker himself. The end result is offbeat, strange and wildly inventive for the typically blandly pretty world of beauty editorials.
