The line between form and function is a constant within design but industrial designer Ron Arad, crosses this line, erases it and renders it obtuse. His slick welded furniture and spare stylized environments look like something out of a science fiction film. Arad’s chairs with their mercuric sheen and sharp curves are every bit as monolithic as the foreboding black slabs of 2001: A Space Odyssey, while his interior design projects echo a Tarkovksy-esque vision of the future. Unlike the elements to which his work is compared Arad’s pieces are based in reality – no matter how fantastical they may seem. As alien as such unorthodox creations may seem their purpose is still completely down to earth.
