Concept cars are the automobile industry’s means of selling ideas. Few will ever cruise down the street in one of the outlandish designs from the vintage Motorama but everyone can be inspired by the unusual and occasionally odd ideas found within these cars. Motorama was designed as a marketing event – from the late 40s to the early 60s General Motors displayed it’s finest prototype vehicles with the hope of garnering the public’s interest. The trick worked but after 1961 the traveling show was discontinued. Thankfully, preserved autos from the classic era still make their way around car shows. From a design standpoint it’s intriguing to see representations of futurism from the past and the creativity that springs forth when practicality isn’t a concern. The cars showcased are truly original, even if you can’t take one for a spin.
