The term ‘down jacket’ rarely inspires anything other than thoughts of subzero temperatures but Moncler has always strived to find a balance between keeping warm and looking cool. Their puffed and padded functional chic jackets with their trademark patches have become a cold weather staple for fashionistas. For their Gamme Rouge collection, Moncler has taken things one step further – enlisting creative director Giambattista Valli to create arguably the most sophisticated puffers in existence.

Fans of Valli’s elegant eponymous line will find similarly crafted looks focusing on volume, proportion and structure. There is something wonderfully experimental about the entire affair and given that this is Valli’s first collection for the line its very possible that experimentation was the goal. The cocoon shaped coats with glam details like marabou feathers and ombre are anything but minimal but there is something restrained that keeps them from becoming ridiculous. One might not wear a bolero cropped jacket with almost Elizabethan ruffles every day but you never know when the opportunity might present itself.
